Crossing the US/Canada Border

Crossing the Border on your fishing trip

Everyone wants their border crossing to go smoothly. The best way to make sure this happens is to know what to expect and be prepared.  Here are some ideas that will be useful for crossing the border into Canada.

Citizens of the United States now need a passport or visa to enter Canada, including arriving in Canada from somewhere other than the USA, or arriving by Air. It is also helpful to have on your person proof of citizenship plus photo identification.

Crossing the Border Into Canada

All visitors arriving in Canada need a passport or passport equivalent. These requirements changed under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, the final phase of this process took effect as of June 1, 2009.

Equivalent Documents include

  • a NEXUS card;
  • a Free and Secure Trade (FAST) card;
  • an enhanced driver’s license (EDL) or enhanced identification card (EIC); or
  • a Secure Certificate of Aboriginal Status.

We prefer the Passport as the best single piece of identification for crossing the border.  It is the most widely accepted form of identification anywhere in the world.
