Springtime Northern Pike Fishing

After a long winter there is nothing better than getting back on the water.  Spring Northern Pike fishing is a great time for the whole family! These hungry game fish provide a lot of action – on almost any lure!

Springtime is an easy time to catch big Northern Pike! They have just finished spawning and tend to lay in shallow water. As the water warms up they will move off to the first structure they find. Working out from the shallows to the edge of weed beds or drop offs puts you in good position to catch big Northern.

What to Bring Northern Pike Fishing

The equipment and lures you would need to bring to catch lunker Northern are;

  1. A medium to heavy action rod 7 foot with at least 25 pound test,
  2. A leader is important to reduce the chance of a tooth or gill rake cutting your line.
  3. A good bait casting reel or large spinning reel is paramount to winch in your trophy.

Some of the things I find that work well for Northern Pike bait are

  • Spoons,
  • Jerk baits,
  • Topwaters,
  • Spinner baits

In the spring, northern pike will bite on almost anything flashy and noisy!

You can always count on Northern Pike for a good fight, so dig in your heels and hang on tight!
