" Dave strings a tale. Date? Time?? Forgot our watches, clocks and calendars, they told us to pack light – so we did. I cleaned the fish, so John had to cook supper. Well he did, sort of, after he burned the rice *and* the carrots he reverted to brown beans. It was a very good thing that he did not burn the fish or the beans because we were very hungry! Oh yes, about the fish – I didn’t go fishing today because it was raining – I went hunting instead. (don’t tell Fern because I don’t think it’s hunting season). I dug my 30-06 out of my pack and one bullet, loaded my rifle and walked into the bush. After walking about 10 hours, I finally spotted an animal – a big buck. As I raised my rifle, I spotted another buck 50 yards to my right. So, thinking quickly, I pulled out my knife, stuck it in a tree about 50 yards straight ahead, ran back, aimed for the knife and pulled the trigger. The lead hit the knife, split in two with each half taking down a nice buck. The recoil pushed me back and I stumbled and rolled down a hill into the lake. I came up sputtering with a beaver in each hand and five walleye stuffed down my shirt. All the buttons popped on my shirt, hitting five partridge sitting in a pine tree. So that’s where the fish came from for supper. Tomorrow we’ll have some deer – and we’ll come back next year for sure!! Dave H. "
