Reed, Todd, Rich and Jeff – At approximately 6 PM I had the highlight of my trip. Upon trolling the north of the river using my favourite Rapla lures, I hooked and landed the largest walleye of my life! It measured 30 inches and weighed 10 lbs. The head was huge! I’ve never seen a walleye so huge in my life. The last thrill was to see him swim away… Thankfully Todd was there to photograph the monster!

Tom, Lind, Chuck and Deb – We caught a great meal of walleyes in the rapids. Link caught the first and the biggest. Ate walleyes ’till we almost exploded – then slept 12 hours! Oh Canada!!
1996 Tom, Lind, Chuck and Deb Fast water deemed to do the best for us – Rapids Falls, quick current. Not in the traditional breakpoints along rocky/weedy shores.
1996 Blain, Michelle, Rob and Cindy The guys are having a really good time! Just like kids again. Lots of sore stomachs from laughing. Being out here away from everything is a definite stress releaser for the men.
Damlo Crew – All kidding aside, we got 20 northern pike 5lbs plus & 23 walleye 18 inches & over. Hate to leave because we had a great time. Feel like you are retired
Vaughn, Starnes & Salley’s, TN We have been to Canada a few times before and this cabin is by far the nicest we’ve stayed in. It’s especially nice to have running water and showers.
David, Shawny & Jason Great cabin with many more amenities than we had anticipated.
David, Shawny & Jason – We caught 15 walleyes that we ate until we couldn’t move, then watched two beavers, or rather they watched us for quite some time more than we had anticipated.
Dudge and Crew After jigging a minnow with no results, Bill throws it out the back of the boat with a bobber. The nature of our fishing trip changed! We had all-you-can-eat walleye dinners every night!
Tobi and James At about 2:30 we found walleye – and a bunch of them just before Little island in North Arm Bay. Caught 16 northern pike, 24 walleye and 3 perch.
Tobi and James Never seen a storm blow in and out so fast. Lasted about 45 minutes – very intense. Went out after storm, saw bull moose in Mayer Bay. Caught a dozen walleye, 6 northerns and 5 perch, one at 1.5 lbs! It was a great, great day!
Tobi and James - Decided to try the west side of Ontario Bay. One word says it all. Awesome!! No real size but a whole lot of fun!
Vaughn, Starnes & Salley’s, TN - Thanks, Fern and Don, for a great time. Our accommodations were great and the fishing exceeded our expectations.
Jan, Buddy and Shadow – Fern flew in with 24 Labatt’s on ice! We were running lower than we thought. This is truly God’s country. Accommodations are great. If this is roughing it, we all have it too easy.
Baron Party – Lenny gets a late day 40 inch/15 lb Northern at the bottom of Harlow Bay and Jeff bags a 42 inch/15 lb 7 oz monster trolling outside Carlson Bay. Our satisfaction with our 4th Kashabowie Outposts trip is still the same – AWESOME!
Tobi and James – Went to try Firefly Point Area and managed to boat 10 walleye 6″ to 14″, 7 northern pike, 3 at six pounds, and one jumbo, jumbo perch!
The Mentzer Group – It has been a fantastic four days of fishing. The northern pike averaged 5 to 6 lbs with 6 over 30 inches. The walleye were not as large, but we caught 75 to 100 – we let most of them go. Leaches were the bait of choice.
Mike, Pauline, Jla & Paul – Had a great time! Cabin is wonderful. Fishing was better than average! We ate fish every day. Yum Yum! Seen a couple moose at Harlow Bay, 2 deer by Impassable Pass, picked blueberries and had blueberry pancakes two mornings. We’ll be back!
Cowlings, Jansens & Strauss – Beth requests that visitors feed her little friends, White the Gull, Red the squirrel, and Chip the chipmunk.
Jack, Jenny, John and Tom – Had a good week of fishing. Lots of northern pike and walleyes. Ate fish every day! Saw a moose and her calf in Meyers Bay. We’ll be back!
Chuck and Jill’s Big Adventure. Spotted a bay just North of the cabin which was weedy and shallow. Just the place Northern Pike would be. Soon we began to get one after another. Chuck cast a blue aqua-spoon and landed a 35 inch Pike! Then ten minutes later I caught the biggest fish I have ever caught!
Chuck, Tyler, Nick and Mark – Had shore lunch at FireFly Point. It was really a treat. Seen 3 Bald Eagles and one Golden Eagle today. While bring in boats to the dock, seen the biggest spider of my 38 years of living. 3 inches in diameter and it still lurks under the Dock to this day. If you see it your fair will literally stand up on the back of your neck!!
Mike, Pauline, Jan & Paul – The fly in was beautiful to see such a vast wilderness area. Really glad to have had the opportunity to see all of this beauty.
Mark, Scott, John & Andrew – As Scott and Andy were fishing at the point (an excellent place to fish), Andy caught a 3 pound walleye. As he was taking the hook off, Scott yelled “Get the net! I’ve got a Pike!” Andy panicked and dropped his walleye to get the net!
Mike, Doc, John and Alfred – June 2000 – Came in on Tuesday and we were fished out by Friday. Caught many walleyes and northern every day. Ate four walleye dinners and caught our limits. We caught and 8.1, 7.7, 7.6 & 7.1 lbs walleyes, and our average walleye was about 3 lbs. Fishing was fantastic and the landscaping beautiful. We saw a Moose with 2 calves at the falls area, Bald Eagles, a snowshoe Rabbit and a wolf!
Mark, Scott, John & Andrew – We now believe that we have caught every fish in the lake. The first few days we counted over five thousand fish, but we stopped counting after that.
Mark, Scott, John & Andrew – July 28 – I woke up this morning with a fish in my face. Mark and John had caught a 5 pound pike and we named it Henando! He tasted great!
Steve and Bill – On Sunday, our hot spot moved to the other side of the Island with a change in the wind direction. We were reeling in doubles on walleyes!
Steve and Bill. – Thursday and Friday we found walleye in several locations. Saturday while jig fishing for walleye in our hot spot, I hooked onto a large Northern. It took me about 25 minute to bring him (her) boat-side to take a look. The fish was 37-40 long, we guessed about 18 lbs. Not bad for 6-lb test and 1/16 of jig with a minnow!
Steve and Bill. Good walleye fishing around the island in the far North-eastern bay across from the cabin. Fish the side the wind is blowing in to. 6-10′ deep away from the shore, look for weeds & bait fish.
Russ, Kevin, Dave, Pete – Evening fishing was very good, Kevin & Pete both getting 17-20 inch walleye’s in the 1st small bay, southwest of the cabin.
Chuck and Jill’s Big Adventure. As we drifted across the bay and looked behind us we saw we had company. It was a huge bull moose standing in the swamp looking right at us. He stood long enough for us to get him on our video camera then slowly turned and walked back into the woods. What a beautiful site.
Steve and Bill. I had just released my fish when I saw a huge Northern take a swipe at my Dad’s walleye near the boat. I yelled at him to open the bail which he did, with a confused look on his face, since the walleye was about 12 inches long. Sure enough, the Pike grabbed the walleye sideways & ran off to deep water. We had a portable depth finder and the Northern sat in about 18-20′ of water and started to eat the walleye (we guess). After about 20 minutes the fish started to move and the fight was on! We went all over the bay with this fish & got it to the surface twice, but on the third try near the boat the fish flipped his tail & snapped the line!! Big disappointment! The fish was a good 40 inches! What a fight!
Chuck and Jill’s Big Adventure. Here we sit waiting for the plane. We really did have a big adventure. I caught a 40 inch Northern who gave me the fight of my life. We let him go so maybe he’ll be even bigger if you get the chance to hook him!
Russ, Kevin, Dave, Pete. Bugs haven’t been bad at all but we’re almost out of sunscreen, plane comes tomorrow, hope we make it… so far haven’t used coat, sweatshirts, sleeping bags, shoes or long sleeved shirts; that’s all for now. To hell with the fish – heading for the beach!
Russ, Kevin, Dave, Pete – Went swimming at cabin on east shore of Holly Lake, nice sandy beach! (Glad no one was there!)
The Klonowski’s – Had 4 beautiful days of breezy, sunny weather. Cabin suits 6 men well with everyone contributing. I shall go back with many memories and a few pictures. And when things get rough back home, a 10 min trip to Grew Lake with Dad & brothers will put it all back in perspective. Try to beat the fun we had. We smiled and fished, poked fun of each other and reminisced.
Russ, Kevin, Dave, Pete – Fishing was good mid-morning, nothing big, but several smaller walleye’s & pike. Myself and the boys went swimming off a rock point in Holly Lake. FELT GOOD!
Marvin, Bill, Dan, Frank, Dave – Would you believe we are having fish again, no steaks, no chicken, no hamburgers – just some fantastic fish! Everyone enjoyed this trip! Fishing was good! Will make it again!
John and Sharon – Enjoyed the Loon Orchestra – the eagles, and the otter off the corner post of the porch at water’s edge. He was pretty playful. The chipmunks are bold as can be. Will crawl up your leg and eat out of your hand!
John and Sharon – Caught some walleye today & did some exploring. Caught a moose walking along shore on our way to Holly Lake. Found the rapids that connects to Dara Lake and walked the portage. It’s very pretty looking up the Grew River.
John and Sharon – We had a great meal of walleye, fried potatoes and onions. Ooooh – so good! The shower was a real treat, and we had a great bonfire tonight and a few games of cribbage.
BillyBob & Pork – We set out at 4:00 PM. Slam the walleyes were ready. From then till 9:30 we caught our limit. The fishing wasn’t bad neither. Use the ugliest green and silver lure you got and you’ll catch big northern.
John and Sharon – After a light breakfast we set out to fish & explore! Travelling toward Holly, we turned into a quiet cove on the right and enjoyed a wonderful treat. We had stumbled across a family of otter – the baby was delightful. We watched, awe-struck, as they swam, dove, chattered to us & each other.
Marvin, Bill, Dan, Frank, Dave – Lots of fish – several walleye limits, some big northerns, found one spot loaded with northern, including 25 inch, 28 inch, 31 inch and 37 inch – all in one day, by one fisherman!
John and Sharon – We’ve had a lovely vacation here, and it’s kind of sad to leave. We like all the animals, and we’ve personalized our temporary home and it suits us well. Enjoyed the sights and sounds – the wonderful mosses, gulls, loons, wild irises, ducks, etc… It was restful & peaceful!
Gibbs Grew – Fishing is good if you like to eat fish! Lots of 12 to 16′ walleye – northern fishing is good – seen one bear, two seagulls and one chipmunk
The Loetscher’s – The trip has been Most Excellent. Many walleyes 15 – 20 inches, many northern – 2 to 7 lbs, and lots of laughs! Hope your stay is as good!
John and Sharon – We saw a beaver and two martins. One was making a duck very unhappy. After listening to this duck in distress for a while, we paddled over to find the tall grasses wiggling, big-time! The brazen marten came noisily out of the underbrush and stared at us! When me moved away, back he went. We think that marten had invaded the duck’s nest!
Tom, Tom Jr., and Bill – Being that a fly-in trip to Grew Lake is nothing more than manly men doing manly things in manly fashion with other manly men, it is impossible to screw up without penalty. A series of one dollar fines are imposed for anything short of total manliness.
Jennifer & Tim – Seven days of beautiful sunny skies and lots of walleyes! Trolling is the way to go… walleyes like the morning… Northerns like the evening!
Jennifer & Tim - We’ll be back for the fishing! I out-fished Tim, caught a 17 1/2 inch walleye, but Tim caught a 29 inch northern. I caught so many fish I wore out my Rapala! Didn’t use minnows or leaches, only Rapalas – go figure!
Jennifer & Tim – Tim had 2 chipmunk buddies he would literally call by squeaking. They sure like cereal! They’ll even crawl up your legs! Loons were a beautiful site and sound! Again Tim made conversation with them… and they called back!
Don, Brian, Joe & Ian – Ice out now for 2 to 3 days, water is cold as hell. On the 3rd day – we found walleye & plenty of them. Our hot spot was in Holly Lake, west of the river outlet. Just trolled along the shoreline with Rapalas & ‘Thunder-sticks’
Transue & Ghosh – Cabin facility is great, nice to have the hot shower at days end and the solar lighting. Wish there was more time, by the time you really wind down the return is at hand…
Transue & Ghosh – Friday was better than Thursday. We’re up at 6AM and hit the ‘honey holes’ – success! The great thing about a fly-in lake is that there is fish! You just have to find them and under the changing conditions, Grew has all the great north country characteristics. Location and structure and the fish are there. Find the right spot and everyone is on with nice stringers.
Tom, Tom Jr., and Bill – A cold front came through on Friday and we started scoring nicely on walleyes. They all seemed to be the same size, 15-17 inches and up to 2 1/2 lbs. We did well in the bay just west of the waterfalls – was the first time the walleyes showed any interest in live bait.
Chip & Matt – This is our first ever fishing trip. Sure is easier than camping in the BWCA!
Chip & Matt – Matt out-fished Dad every day. Catching walleye on everything including an over-sized Daredevil – and almost caught a loon that surfaced right next to our boat! Do loons taste like chicken?
Don, Brian, Joe & Ian – Don caught Shampoo on Friday night! The northern weighed in at 18 lobs, and was 43 inch. Said it came in like a big log & didn’t put up much of a fight. Don is going to mount it when he returns home! What a monster! We caught about 40 walleye’s and 75 Northern. The cabins were awesome, boats ran great, and Don, Fern and their crew took great care of us.
Kauppo & Jarhlio – Hello from Finland! We had a great time, lots of fish, it was nice to have a hot shower in a fish camp! Also the cabin was very comfortable and the lake and scenery was very beautiful. We would like to thank those who allowed us to enjoy this great Canadian Adventure!
Craig and Trudy – Tonight we tried fish another way. We’ve had it on the grill and on the stove with several different kinds of seasoning – and tonight we wrapped each fillet with a piece of bacon and breaded it. The best yet!
Craig and Trudy – 3rd Day – Hot out and no clouds. The fishing is incredible! Another 20-30 walleyes on both Grew and Holly, lots more northerns, and by now we’ve seen a dozen eagles! We found a Hot spot on Grew that won’t quit. Biggest walleye 19 1/2 inches, biggest northern 31 inches!
Doug and Carolynn – We’re here on our honeymoon. Everything is great – cabin is cozy. Seems unreal to have a shower in the middle of nowhere. Outhouse is even nice. Scenery is so beautiful it will be hard to describe when we get back home.
Dave and Jean – Caught lots of walleye & had a great walleye dinner. Beautiful evening for a campfire – and the Loons were serenading us. The best walleye fishing was on Holly Lake, on the sandy areas. It seemed very strange to have the entire lake to ourselves!
Tom, Tom Jr., and Bill – We got Tom with a dollar fine – he hooked a walleye 60 feet from the boat perfectly, then for some unknown reason, he re-sets the hook 15 feet from the boat. He resets is with enough force to raise a submarine. The fish flies out of the water, over the net, and WHAP! Off the side of the boat! The bait flies out of the fishes mouth and the fish goes free. Jr and I looked at him as one and said ‘That’s a buck’
Craig and Trudy – I received an envelope for Christmas from my sister-in-law. Inside was a gift certificate for a Fly in Fishing Trip for three days of fishing!
Craig and Trudy – 2nd Day – We tried Holly – Caught tons of fish. 30- 40 walleyes, ate a few and threw the rest back. Grew lake produced several 28 inch northerns and several 17-18 inch walleyes!
Craig and Trudy – 1st Day – Lots of fish! We stayed on Grew and caught about 20 walleye and 5 northerns. There are no bugs! The weather is great – except a little rain.
Charlie, Jerry, Kurt and Jeff – Flew in Saturday at noon. By 5 pm we had more walleye and a few northern, than the 4 of us could eat! Anything we threw at them they would bite on. Biggest walleye for the afternoon was 27 inches and 8 lbs – took lots of pictures and released. Biggest northern, 32 inch (a little to lively to weigh)
Pete and Betsy – Just got back from the dock. I sure hope that you folks get a clear night. We were sitting on the dock wind totally calm, stars out in God’s wonder. There were stars I have never seen before – and oh, that UFO that everyone talks about? We saw it too. Betsy said it was the shuttle though. The air is so clean, it smells good. I sure you can take in what we did today & tonight – this is the exact reason for coming up here.
Todd, Sandra and three boys – We all had a great time here. We have been here five days now & will be flying out in the morning. The fishing was great. Sandra says this was the best fishing of her life! The accommodations are fantastic as well as the crew at Kashabowie Outposts
Pete and Betsy – Our pilot, Pete, told us a couple of spots we might want to fish. We unpacked & headed for the boats with tackle in hand. Following Pete’s advice, we headed southwest and took a right at the first bay. We had a ball catching walleyes & 2 30 inch northern pike on ultra-light tackle! Fish fillets for supper! Yum!
Pete and Betsy – I positioned the boat in a far back bay with lots of weeds. keep reelin’ in – don’t stop I said, and sure enough a nice northern hit. It was well over 30 inches. Moments later Betsy had the BIG ONE on. 40 inches or better – this one came to the boat fighting. Betsy had all she could do to hold on, then, with one quick turn the line caught in his teeth – and there it was – GONE.
Leo & Harry – Good plane ride, seen two bears from the air! Went fishing the first day an ate like Kings! A real nice sunrise with fog on the lake – went to Holly lake and we kicked ass on walleye and northern. Caught a 28 inch northern and released it – made a good picture! We had one hell of a time. Would recommend it to anyone!
Pete and Betsy – Well, it’s our last day – we’ve enjoyed our stay enormously. We hope that you have good experiences also. This place is really what you make of it. If you’re here to catch fish and enjoy God’s solitude – it’s great! Just eating fresh walleye is heaven!
Pete and Betsy – This morning we awoke to the sound of loons and chipmunks. It is so peaceful out here.
Pete and Betsy – Just got done eating. Nothing beats fresh fish – especially ‘eyes’! Our day today was a good one. We trolled all the way to Holly Lake, well most of the way – we had a blast! We lost count of how many we caught. Just kept score – who caught most fish. Yes she did! ONE more than me! It’s great!
Craig and Trudy - We are packed and waiting for the plane – we tried one more time for the big one – instead we found another Hot Spot – the walleye wouldn’t quit! One more 19 1/2 inch walleye and one more 28 inch northern! Great Vacation!!
Tim’s Motley Crew – June 26-30th Arrived here with a motley crew. Spent the next four days fighting mosquitoes in hand-to-hand combat. Managed to catch numerous walleye and northern pike. Some walleyes up to 6 pounds! If you find any lost lures, they are mine. I lost plenty!. If located, just return them to Fern. He can save them till our crew returns!
Dave & Gerry – Thursday, 20 northerns in 2 1/2 hours, several 34-35 inches. Friday AM, about 30 northerns with largest 39 inches. Friday PM, 15 northerns in less than three hours. Next time I come I will check out walleye fishing. Did not have time this trip! The northern pike fishing was too much fun!
Mountairy Lake 1996 Fern Fights Forest Fire – Friday June 14 1996, Fern writes: Flew in to stop the fire from getting the cabin. Helicopter came in & took sprinkler system for cabin. Sprayed trees near by, but not long after I started spraying, I had to run for the boat. Unbelievable!! Hard to breath for a bit but it was ok once I was out on the lake. A rabbit ran on the point so I caught it (alive) and took it to the Big Island but now the fire jumped to it too.
Mountairy Lake 1996 Fern Fights Forest Fire – Friday June 14 1996, Fern writes: Hauled the boats, motors, & propane out to a little island and anchored them out floating. Tied the plane floating too, and slept in it. All night I woke up and saw fires flaring up all over. SPOOKY!
Mountairy Lake 1996 Fern Fights Forest Fire – Saturday June 15 1996, Fern writes: So smokey I could hardly see the far shore. Came back to cabin and wet down the area again. Winds shifted all directions during the night. Once visibility cleared a little, I took a flight to the south. There are fires everywhere. Looks like my trap shack on a lake to the south may get burned too.
Bill, Steve, Ab, Denny. Fishing Lesson 1 – if you don’t get snagged for two hours, make sure you have a hook at the end of your line. Fishing Lesson 2 – if the weather turns bad – the fish turn on! We caught more than 100 – largest was 23 inches! Fishing Lesson 3 – don’t burn all the wood on Friday night, especially when the weather is bad on Saturday. We had a good consistent week of fishing – the weather was so-so.
Kim, Kyle Chase and Crew – The fishing was great! We went to the Honey Holes and milked ‘em dry. We saw a Bald Eagle today. I would catch a walleye and kill it and put it on a rock and wait for the eagle to snatch it up and eat it.
Dad and Kip Kip and I arrive on July 20th with Don Blair on the OCC. Weather has been Great – 28 C today and in fact too hot for doing all the work we had committed to. Hopefully, Fern, next time we will get it done. We did manage to do all a lot of boating and fishing! We got up to the second rapids up the Seine River, which has been our best fishing spot. Today we got into Purgatory Pass Via Firefly Point & found it to be a dead end with very low water levels. We then headed towards Arrowhead Bay and caught one walleye at each set of rapids. Saw a deer yesterday on the way up the Seine River & also spotted a bald eagle. There were 2 Bull Moose at the far end of Harlow Bay at about 8:45PM. To bad we must go tomorrow, but Fern, thanks for a great vacation! Dad and Kip.
The Braun Family writes: Fern, Don, Thank you so much for another wonderful week of fishing at Kashabowie Outposts’ Piche Lake. As we have become accustom, your accommodating our group was above expectations.
Enclosed are pictures of the 3 biggest fish we caught for the week. Yes, I know the yourgest member of the group is holding them all. Zach had himself a great week. Funny at age 11 he has caught more big fish than his dad!! Although all three pictures show the joy he has in catching fish, the picture holding the 41 1/2 inch fish really captured the moment. The entire time it took to take 3-4 pictures he was yelling YAAA!! Please enter that photo in your annual contest for best picture. Thanks again and count on us again in 2005!! Regards, D Braun
Dave strings a tale. Date? Time?? Forgot our watches, clocks and calendars, they told us to pack light – so we did. I cleaned the fish, so John had to cook supper. Well he did, sort of, after he burned the rice *and* the carrots he reverted to brown beans. It was a very good thing that he did not burn the fish or the beans because we were very hungry! Oh yes, about the fish – I didn’t go fishing today because it was raining – I went hunting instead. (don’t tell Fern because I don’t think it’s hunting season). I dug my 30-06 out of my pack and one bullet, loaded my rifle and walked into the bush. After walking about 10 hours, I finally spotted an animal – a big buck. As I raised my rifle, I spotted another buck 50 yards to my right. So, thinking quickly, I pulled out my knife, stuck it in a tree about 50 yards straight ahead, ran back, aimed for the knife and pulled the trigger. The lead hit the knife, split in two with each half taking down a nice buck. The recoil pushed me back and I stumbled and rolled down a hill into the lake. I came up sputtering with a beaver in each hand and five walleye stuffed down my shirt. All the buttons popped on my shirt, hitting five partridge sitting in a pine tree. So that’s where the fish came from for supper. Tomorrow we’ll have some deer – and we’ll come back next year for sure!! Dave H.
The Boys of Northwestern – The boys of Northwestern Hockey Sports Camp Hoody, Bummer, Frenchy, Shakey, Bo, Frenchy II and Jigger. Things started quickly on the trip with Bummer taking THE BAIT and heading due north. Bummer was given a false hot spot map and even a second lake Little Mountairy where fishing was to be hot!! The boat of Huddy & the Marlboro Man headed quickly south to the Narrows with Lee’s Marlboro paraphernalia and depth/fish finder… only to discover that 2 baby walleye awaited! The Walleye Gods and the will of Bummer hammered the walleyes in the north end. Seems justice prevailed! Good fisherman – and cock card players!! Another memorable fly in fishing trip for the boys of Northwestern!
