This “Canada Video” was sent to us by what could be the most creative family fishing trip group that we’ve ever had stay at one of our Outpost Cabins!
Loganberry Tales – The Fly in Fishing Song

Loganberry is where we’ll be
Flying here straight with Kashabowie Outposts

With our friend Fern this place is tight
You can get yourself here in half an hour flight

This lake is great and the cabin is kickin’
You can catch yourself some fish and you’re finger lickin’

This place is the best and we wish we could stay
eat sleep and fish, every single day.

So now lets kick it, to the first verse
Common now Jake, just like we rehearsed.

The weather is perfect, not to hot or cold
Put this place for sale, and two seconds it’d be sold

You can swim if you want, but it’s a little chilly
and when you start to shiver, you’ll look really silly

So we make a fire, so big it burns a tree
You can say goodbye to your eagles and your bees

Where my momma lets my beard, grow out long,
and she tries to write verses to her own song.

Where I don’t need to stay and clean my dish
Instead I get to go out and catch a fish

It’s Canada, that’s where we are
Just ask Fern, cause it’s not that far.

The water’s cold, I’m not gonna lie,
but deep inside is the big walleye

Sleeping on the bed is nice and comfy
you won’t fall off like humpty dumpty

No other places have showers this nice
Look no more, Fern’s got the best price.

Only a three mile walk to the can,
hope I don’t get jumped by that shadow man,

This cabin is bombin’ I don’t really mean to diss
But do really need this bridge to take a piss?

I love it here, it’s all fun and good,
but my homies be callin’ they need me in the hood.

I can’t wait to get back to the USA
I guess Canada wasn’t all bad – ‘eh’?

Thanks for the memories, we had a lot of fun
but now I’m sad, cause it’s all done

I’ll miss fishing, playing too,
but we snuck 50 fish back,
so the joke is on you!

My best fish was only this big
It made me so mad I’m going to snap to this twig

You have a contest, picture of the year
That idea might get old we fear

It’s all about the creativity
We’ll always be the winners, don’t you see?

Thanks Kashabowie Outposts!
We’ll be back!

After 25 years of fly-in fishing at Kashabowie Outposts, Rich Koenig has trophy fishing down to a fine art.

“There’s always the potential of a giant fish,’ said Koenig, who along with brother Al brings groups of friends and business clients to Wapikaimaski Lake each year for Walleye in excess of 10 lbs. Primarily catch and release, Koenig said the quest is always to catch the ‘giant,’ and capture the moment on camera.

Because their trips are usually only four to five days long (he alternates between Wapikaimaski and Mosher Lake, where the group pursues large Northern), Koenig’s group is serious about fishing. “It’s a concentrated trip. We fish heavy-from morning until night.”

If trophy fish is what you’re after, Wapikaimaski Lake doesn’t disappoint, said Koenig. “I consider it a really good lake to that effect. It’s a huge lake -a totally different type of fishing.” A 20 mile long lake, it has many hidden bays and islands and fast water.

An added asset is the remoteness and the abundant wildlife. In his many trips to Wapikaimaski, Koenig says he has seen everything from otters and moose to two Caribou who crossed in front of his boat–making for some incredible photographs.

The four bedroom cabin offers “excellent accommodations” for up to 12 occupants and offers everything you need, says Koenig.

And thanks to radio phones (one of the new services added over the many years he has been a guest), “if you run out of anything, they’ll fly it in. They pay a lot of attention to their guests.”
Which means all there is to think about is finding that giant.

“I don’t think you tire of beauty – I just don’t think that happens.”

Nebraska’s Mark Schanbacher describes why he has returned to Mosher Lake every year since the late 1990s.

“You get some of the most beautiful sunsets and the colours are just amazing. Then there’s the wildlife; the bears, the moose, the eagles fighting…”

Of course the Northern fishing is a special attraction for Schanbacher’s yearly group which includes family and friends, what really makes it special is the “environment that you catch it in.”

There are a number of reasons Schanbacher has returned faithfully to Mosher; the beauty, isolation and the short flight. The advantages of a 15 minute flight, he says are that for those prone to motion sickness–it is short enough to lessen that likelihood, and weather conditions are less likely to impede scheduled arrivals or departures.

Located 23 miles northeast of Kashabowie Outposts air base, Mosher Lake has helped in the creation of some family memories–from tipping a boat, (with a little help from a brother who’s “not on the extremely coordinated side.”) to cliff jumping for the kids.

Of the three-bedroom cabin that comfortably holds 10, Schanbacher notes,

“They’re very nice accommodations. I think most people are surprised when they get there, by the quality of the accommodations.”

(The cabin also offers solar-powered lights, hot and cold running water, shower, cooking stove with oven, refrigerator, with barbeque and fish cooker available.)

Alongside the cabin, a gazebo offers the perfect view of the lake–framed by rocky shoreline and granite cliffs.

Schanbacher admits that Mosher Lake is almost a secret he likes to keep to himself, because of a feeling of ownership he feels about his times at Mosher.

“When you’re there, you feel like it’s your lake. For one week, you have it all to yourself. There’s no other cabins, no news…nothing, so the world just passes you by. Your whole universe is that lake. It’s a great escape.”

Ron Mandernach has been waiting thirty years to catch a 35.5 inch Walleye. As it turns out, his wife Nancy caught it a year ago on a fishing vacation to Grew Lake. And he’s not even bitter about it-really. After all, “It takes a good guide-if I didn’t take her to the right place she wouldn’t have caught it.”

A well coordinated team, this couple from Ohio share a love of fishing that has made week-long fly-in fishing vacations to Kashabowie Outposts’ Grew Lake a new tradition.

“Grew Lake is probably the nicest lake I’ve been to,” says Ron (who was content with several Walleye in the over-30 inch range this year). “It’s a very easy lake to fish.” Even with last summer’s hot temperatures, which usually make for harder fishing, “We still did very well. We probably caught a dozen over-25 inch Walleyes, as well as a few 12-17 lb. Northern.” The couple practice catch and release, searching for trophy fish to capture on camera.

Nancy, who caught the fishing fever about 15 years ago, said the couple have enjoyed fishing new lakes, but have decided to stick with Grew. “This is actually the place where we have caught the biggest Walleyes.”

In addition to the fishing, there a couple of other reasons for the Mandernach’s loyalty to Grew. The wildness of this lake 68 miles northeast of Kashabowie Outposts affords some rare glimpses of wildlife, such as moose, bear and this past year, the opportunity to see wild grouse was a first for the couple.

“We go for the nature and the quiet and you get it-and it is absolutely awesome. One sunset is not like another and the colours are magnificent,” said Nancy.

The accommodations (two bedrooms which comfortably hold eight) are immaculate and the equipment always in good working order, say Ron and Nancy. Now in their 50s, they also like the security of the radio phones, and only being a phone call away.

A short flight of about 20 minutes into Grew Lake means the areas is remote, yet close enough to be convenient, when the couple has a 1200 mile return road trip ahead of them. “They come to get you about 9 o’clock in the morning and then we hit the road on the way back.”

Good fishing, quality service and accommodations combined with the familiarity they feel with the lake mean the couple plan on at least one Grew Lake vacation every summer, said Ron.

“We kind of got a tradition now-we’ll probably keep coming to Grew until we can’t do it anymore.”

No one knows better than a so-called ‘Boomer’ that age is just a number. And no one is going to tell the generation approaching retirement or already retired, that it’s time to hop on a tour bus for the ultimate vacation.

As Kashabowie Outposts and its clients have known for years, Boomers are looking for adventure and comfort when planning vacations–and that is precisely what they offer with a top-class fly-in fishing vacation in Canada!

Kashabowie Outposts has noticed an increase in its retirement age travelers, and have responded to their needs by offering more amenities to provide a remote fishing and wilderness adventure, with all the comforts needed to enjoy the tranquility of nature.

A wilderness lake (at eleven of Kashabowie Outposts’ 12 lakes you will be at the only cabin on the lake) provides the opportunity to catch large Walleye (8-10 lbs.), Northern (over 20 lbs.!) and the thrill of reeling in a SmallMouth Bass.

Experienced pilots provide professional floatplane service, which will transport you to a different reality, a private cabin nestled in the untamed beauty of northwestern Ontario’s wilderness. Cabins provide the opportunity to drink in nature–the call of the loons, the lapping water-and several cabins offer the opportunity to enjoy it all from the deck or sauna.

All cabins provide amenities such as propane stove, fridge and barbeque, cooking and eating utensils, hot and cold running water, showers, solar powered lights and radiophones. You will also have the use of 14′ boats with 9.9 horsepower motors and all the gas you require for as much fishing as you could possibly want!

While Kashabowie Outposts knows their retirement age guests enjoy comfort, they’re not ready for the rocking chair yet! Therefore, they do their utmost to provide quality, safe yet truly unique wilderness holidays.

The Kashabowie Outposts air base is easily accessible (check out our location) and only 1-3 hour direct flight to nearby Atikokan or a scenic day’s drive from Chicago, Des Moines, Milwaukee or Minneaplois/St. Paul.

It’s the ultimate adventure and relaxation!

You’ve been planning a motorcycle trip to Ontario, so why not make your destination a fly-in fishing trip? For many of Kashabowie Outposts’ guests it has become the ultimate adventure, affording the opportunity to see Canada’s breathtaking wilderness highways up close, combined with the wilderness fishing vacation of a lifetime.

Motorcyclists travel light, which is fine when you come to Kashabowie Outposts where boats, motors, gas and fully equipped cabins provide the necessities of a fantastic fishing experience.

Once you pack your fishing rod (check out What to Bring) and essentials, there is nothing to do but follow the highway’s beckoning call–straight to Eva Lake. When you cross the bridge at International Falls, MN you’ll soon realize you’re in the heart of northwestern Ontario’s wilderness. Thick forest and plenteous lakes frame the 105-mile trek along highway 11 to highway 633. After a right turn down Eva lake West’s gravel road, a two-mile drive will bring you to the next stage of your adventure — just park your bike in exchange for a bush plane ride to your private cabin on a remote lake.

Cabins offer propane barbeque, fridge and stove, solar-powered lights, showers, hot and cold running water, radio phones, kitchen and dining area, with some cabins offering decks and saunas.

After a day on the lake, reeling in 8-10 lb. Walleye or Northerns in excess of 20 lbs, or Smallmouth Bass, it’s time to relax with a dinner of fresh-caught fish, surrounded by the serenity of nature. In fact, 11 of 12 outposts are the only cabin on each wilderness lake.

By the time your fishing vacation draws to an end, you’ll be ready to hop back on your motorcycle and head for the homeward adventure–because exploring our wilderness lakes and highways gives you the total northwestern Ontario experience.

With several lakes accessible through Bemar Lake (32 miles southeast of Kashabowie Outposts), Wisconsin’s Jeff Winn says there is the option to fish for small mouth Bass, Walleye or Northern so “there’s always something happening.”

From Bemar Lake, “You can take daily trips into Quetico Park.”

After many years of fishing Sagnagons, Ross, Elevation and Bitchu lakes, Winn and a regular gang of childhood friends and their sons remain loyal to this location because of the many great fishing and scenic options. Whether boating on Bemar or canoeing in the Park, the adventure is different. With no motorized vehicle access, the Park offers tranquil beauty and excellent fishing.

Winn said the biggest Walleye the group has caught was about 31.5 lbs; the biggest Northern was 44.5 lbs; and some small mouth bass at close to 6 lbs. “We catch lots of 3 to 5 lb bass.”

Although a very popular lake, Winn said that after many years of staying at Bemar, “I don’t think anybody in the world knows more about those lakes than I do. I plan to keep going back as long as I am able.”

It’s a 12 hour drive for Winn’s gang, but now with the Paddler’s Rest Bed and Breakfast next door to Kashabowie Outposts, “You get a good night’s sleep and you’re ready to go.”

When it comes to flying in, “I like the fact that they tell you what time of your flight. Because of good coordination, it’s not a rush. They seem to have it down to a science.”

Planning, attentiveness and an eye to detail make all the difference, said Winn. The 10 person, three bedroom cabin is fully equipped with solar lights, hot and cold running water, showers, stove with oven, refrigerators, barbeque and fish cooker available. The large cabin (the only one on the lake) also has a large deck. A radiophone helps ensure safety but also that the guest has everything necessary to really enjoy a vacation.

“I like ice. I don’t like warm beer or pop when I’m on vacation,” explains Winn. “They make sure you have ice when they fly you in and they check in to see if you need more. They stay ahead of the game. They always stay on top of upgrading the cabins and equipment.”
